Settle in...there are tons of pictures ahead...
Today started early...very early!
We had planned on waking up at 7am (which if you know us, that's unheard of) so we could hit up the Phoenix Zoo nice and early before the sweltering heat filtered in. But when Jamie and I both woke up at 6am, we figured we might as well get up and get going...since the zoo is only open 7am-2pm.
I had actually read about the Phoenix Zoo in the Family Fun magazine months ago and that's where I got the idea to go to Arizona this summer. The article raved about the zoo...and it was 100% correct!
At 7:30 in the morning...and it's already blazing hot!
The animals at this zoo are so well taken care of. They are beautiful.
And the animals are all close, so the kids can actually see them.
We found misters! Hallelujah!!!
After visiting a bunch of animals, we came across a small splash pad. This has to be the smartest thing in the whole zoo!
Sophie wasn't too sure about getting wet...
You know it's hot when Isabel gets herself wet, fully clothed.
Katie-poo has a bear on her head!
Next up...my main reason for coming here so early...
...feeding the giraffes!
It's only open for one hour each day, so we made sure to be first in line so we didn't miss it.
So much fun!
And well worth the long and very hot walk in the sun to the giraffe feeding platform.
It worked out well since the lions were right next to the feeding platform.
When we first got to the lions, Jamie and I got a little worried because the lions were nowhere to be seen...until we heard a huge roar and out they came!
Back to the splash pad. Sophie actually allowed herself to get wet this time around.
Jamie and I almost jumped in, too.
We visited the little monkey enclosure where they just jumped tree to tree all around us. If the zoo worker wasn't there, we could've touched them...but we wouldn't, of course!
(The necklace is to help tell them apart...each one has a different color bead.)
We saw an elephant too, but I'm not sure why I didn't get a picture of her. Bummer.
This is probably the only time in a gift shop when we told the girls to take their time! It was air conditioned!
Grandma Chris and Grandpa Dean sent some money along for the girls to buy goodies. They spent their money wisely. Where else can you find a green lion!?
The Phoenix Zoo definitely ranks up there in favorite zoos. It may even be at the very top!
It was such a great experience; heat and all!
