Rest In Peace, Hammy

The time came way too soon...our sweet little hamster, Hammy, died Sunday night. It looks like she got sick (Wet Tail...common for such little things) and just didn't make it. She held on long enough for the girls to say their good-byes and then just stopped breathing about 30 minutes after the girls went to sleep.

It broke our hearts to watch the girls be so sad. Kaitlin cried immediately (and for quite a while), Beli held it together until she got into bed and Sophie was sad while she made fake crying noises.

Unfortunately, she died at night after the girls went to sleep so we had to wrap her up in a box and two freezer bags and stick her poor dead body in the freezer until Jamie could come home and help us bury her. I know, so gross...but it's better than having a decomposing hamster in the house (and it's been 114 degrees outside so that wouldn't work either!)
Jamie came home early on Monday night to check out Katie-poo and her stitches and to help lay Hammy to rest. The girls helped him dig a big hole in one of the planters and then we stuck Hammy in with a picture and a note saying we love her. Once the hole was covered up, we laid her "headstones" and flowers on top. The girls decorated the headstones, much like the one for Pickey Pickey in the movie, "Ramona & Beezus". There were more tears from everyone as we said our good-byes. Even Sophie cried for real this time. It was really so sad!
Rest In Peace, Hammy!
You were such a fun little friend, even though you bit our fingers regularly, stunk up the playroom and made a bunch of racket at night while you played in your cage.
We love you anyway!

  1. Awww! This made me cry a little bit too... And I mean real tears! And by the way, those headstones are so cute! Total mixed emotions right now!

  2. Sorry to hear about Hammy! The funeral seemed nice though.
